Hudson River Ground Stabilization: Building the Foundation for Gateway's Future

The Hudson River Ground Stabilization (HRGS) Project is a vital step towards the Gateway Program's Hudson River Tunnel. Located on the Manhattan side of the river, the project is preparing the ground so a new two-track tunnel can connect New Jersey and New York. HRGS is already transforming years of planning into real construction progress, creating the foundation for one of the most important infrastructure projects in the region.
Work is moving fast beneath the Hudson. To stabilize the riverbed, crews are injecting cement and water into soft silt to form reinforced soil columns that can support tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and protect the Hudson's ecosystem. The construction footprint stretches about 1,200 feet long and 100 feet wide, a small shoebox in the vast river but an essential one.
JD Fields & Company, Inc. appreciates the opportunity to serve as the steel supplier for this project, selected by Weeks Marine. Playing a key role, JD Fields & Company, Inc. is supplying 5,500 tons of 96" x .750 pipe piles, with 100 piles at 145 feet each, delivered in full lengths with interlocks attached and ready to drive. The company also provided 370 tons of AZ 14-770 sheet piles, made up of 99 pairs at 70 feet each. These materials form the steel backbone of the project and allow the stabilization work to move forward with confidence. The effort is unfolding in phases that include surveying, testing, and strict compliance with environmental regulations. By the time it is complete in 2027, HRGS will have converted a stretch of riverbed into a point of origin for the tunnel.
